How IRCC counts travel days: The day you leave Canada and the day you return to Canada both count as days of physical presence inside Canada. Only full days spent outside Canada (excluding departure and arrival dates) count toward foreign absence.

How it works

Canadian citizenship requires 1,095 days of physical presence inside Canada within the 5-year window (1,825 days) immediately before the date you apply. The tracker computes your exact physical presence days and projects your earliest eligible filing date.

PR card renewal under Section A28 IRPA requires 730 days of physical presence within every 5-year rolling window. Both requirement meters update live as you adjust your PR landing date or log trips outside Canada.

Temporary Resident Credits: Authorized days spent in Canada as a work permit holder, international student, or visitor before becoming a PR count as 0.5 days toward citizenship (up to a maximum credit of 365 days within the 5-year eligibility window).

Frequently Asked Questions & IRCC Rules

Does the departure day count toward my 1,095 days?

Yes. IRCC considers any portion of a 24-hour day spent inside Canadian territory as a full day of presence. Thus, the departure day and the arrival day are both credited as present.

What happens if I apply with exactly 1,095 days?

While legally permissible, immigration consultants and IRCC strongly suggest waiting until you have a buffer of 10 to 30 additional days (1,105+ days) to avoid application rejection in case of unexpected flight time zone differences or stamping date disputes.

Can I count days spent outside Canada with a Canadian citizen spouse?

For PR Card Renewal (730 days), yes, days accompanying a Canadian citizen spouse abroad generally count toward maintaining PR status. However, for Citizenship (1,095 days), physical presence inside Canadian borders is strictly mandatory, with very narrow exceptions (e.g., Crown servants).

How do I match this calculation with the official IRCC Online tool?

This tool follows the identical algorithm used in the Government of Canada's online physical presence calculator. When you are ready to file, use the Export Calculation button above to generate a CSV/PDF matching the required IRCC format.

Do my student or work permit days before PR count toward citizenship?

Yes, at half value: each day physically present in Canada as a temporary resident (student, worker, or visitor) before PR counts as 0.5 days, credited up to a maximum of 365 days within the 5-year eligibility period.
