Overseas NID & Dual Nationality Services

Managing land, inheritance, power of attorney or bank KYC back home while abroad? Here is how to register or correct your NID from abroad, and how dual nationality with an NVR endorsement works.

NID services from abroad — step by step

1

Register online at services.nidw.gov.bd

Create your account and apply for a new NID, correction, or re-issue. If your old NID number exists, apply for the smart card rather than a fresh registration.

2

Book consular biometric fingerprinting

Bangladesh missions in London, New York, Washington D.C. and Jeddah capture fingerprints for NID issuance — check your mission's appointment system first.

3

Upazila election officer verification

Your application is verified at the upazila election office of your permanent address — a relative can follow up if the online status stalls.

4

Smart NID card dispatch

The smart card is printed centrally and delivered to your upazila election office or through the mission — a relative with the authorisation letter can collect it.

Dual nationality & the NVR endorsement

Bangladeshi-origin citizens of the UK, USA, Canada and most Western countries can hold dual nationality with Bangladesh, applied for through the Security Services Division:

You can apply for the NVR endorsement directly at the Bangladesh mission in your country even before the dual-nationality certificate arrives — the mission's own fee applies.

Frequently asked questions

My name spelling differs between NID and passport — what do I do?

Fix this first: land registry, banks and the 2.5% remittance incentive all match on name spelling. Apply for a correction with your passport bio-page as evidence.

Can I hold dual nationality with a Gulf or Malaysian citizenship?

No — Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Malaysia do not allow dual nationality. The NVR seal keeps lifetime entry rights even after losing Bangladeshi citizenship.

Do I need dual nationality to buy land in Bangladesh?

Not if you are still a Bangladeshi citizen with a valid NID and passport. Foreign citizens of Bangladeshi origin generally need the dual-nationality certificate for land and inheritance transfers.
