USA at a glance for Bangladeshi probashi
The Bangladeshi-American community is concentrated in New York's Jackson Heights and Elmhurst, the Washington DC suburbs, Detroit's Hamtramck, Los Angeles, Dallas and Atlanta, with family sponsorship, H-1B work visas, F-1 student visas and the Diversity Visa lottery all feeding steady growth. The community spans physicians, engineers, rideshare and taxi drivers, restaurant owners and graduate students, and Bangla is a weekend sound in every big-city Bangladeshi grocery aisle.
Three rules govern most paperwork: green-card holders must file US taxes every year on worldwide income, with FBAR disclosure once foreign accounts pass $10,000 combined; N-400 naturalization opens at five years as a permanent resident — three if married to a US citizen; and long absences abroad put the card itself at risk, so plan trips with the absence rules in mind.
Settling-in basics for new arrivals
The first month sets the rhythm: apply for your Social Security number, open a bank account, and get a state ID or start the driver's licence process at the DMV. Credit history starts from zero in the US, so a secured credit card early on quietly builds the score that later landlords and car loans ask about. Health coverage is not automatic — sort employer or marketplace insurance before the first bill, not after.
Money moves matter too: money you have already paid tax on is not taxed again when you send it home, and formal-channel transfers earn Bangladesh's 2.5% incentive on top of the exchange rate. Winters swing from mild in Texas and California to genuinely hard in the Midwest and on the East Coast — budget for a proper winter coat and boots before the first snow, not after.
USA hub FAQ
When can I file Form N-400?
Up to 90 days before the end of your qualifying period — 5 years as a permanent resident (913 days physically present) or 3 years married to a US citizen (548 days). Use the tracker above for your exact date.
Does filing FBAR mean I pay US tax twice on my Sanchayapatra?
No. FBAR is purely an informational disclosure of foreign accounts. Tax on interest (if any) follows your normal return under the US–Bangladesh tax treaty; FBAR itself never adds tax.
How do I make sure my family gets the 2.5% Bangladesh remittance incentive?
Send through licensed banks or MTOs into a Bangladeshi bank account or bKash/Nagad wallet — the 2.5% government cash incentive is credited automatically on official-channel remittance.
How long can I stay abroad without losing my green card?
Trips under six months are routine. A stay of six months to a year raises the presumption that you abandoned residence, and more than a year can void the card for re-entry purposes unless you filed a re-entry permit before leaving. Keep evidence of US ties — bank accounts, tax filings, a US address — for every long trip.
Which US states have no income tax?
Several states, including Texas, Florida and Washington, levy no personal state income tax, which is why take-home pay varies sharply between states on the same salary. The state tax comparison tool on this hub shows the net difference for your exact wage and filing status before you accept an offer.
Can I keep my green card if I take a long contract abroad?
Yes, if you plan it. File US taxes as a resident every year, keep a US address and bank account, return at least twice a year, and apply for a re-entry permit for any single absence over twelve months. Contract work in the Gulf or Bangladesh does not cancel the card by itself — unbroken long absences do.
Can I sponsor my parents' green card?
Only US citizens aged 21 or over can sponsor parents; green-card holders cannot file for parents at all. Until you naturalize, the practical path for parents is a visitor visa, applied through the US embassy in Dhaka with strong evidence of ties to Bangladesh.
