Bringing parents: Subclass 870 vs 143 vs 600

Indicative 2024-25 Home Affairs settings: Subclass 870 (Sponsored Parent Temporary) needs a sponsor who is a citizen/settled resident with about AUD $83,455 taxable income — sponsor charge AUD $420 plus visa charge AUD $5,735 (3-year) / $11,470 (5-year), up to 10 years cumulatively without PR, and it is exempt from the balance-of-family test. Subclass 143 (Contributory Parent PR) costs roughly AUD $47,955 per parent including the second instalment plus an Assurance of Support bond, but delivers PR from day 1 and requires the balance-of-family test (at least half of the parent's children lawfully in Australia). Subclass 600 (Tourist) runs AUD $190-380 for 3-year multi-entry visits of up to 12 months and needs adequate funds and health cover. Verify current charges on the Home Affairs website before budgeting.

Citizenship: the 4-year residence rule and Form 1300t

Australian citizenship by conferral (Form 1300t) generally needs 4 years of lawful residence including the final 12 months as a PR, with total absences under 365 days across the 4 years and under 90 days in the final 12 months. Children born in Australia are citizens by birth when either parent is a citizen or PR, and they remain Bangladeshi citizens by descent — follow the order: AU passport → BDRIS birth registration → NVR seal.

Driving on a Bangladesh licence in NSW

Bangladesh is not on NSW's recognised-licence list, so conversion means passing the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) and then the practical driving test. Temporary visa holders staying more than 6 months must convert to a NSW licence, and permanent residents within 3 months of PR. Rules vary by state — Victoria, Queensland and WA apply their own thresholds and test waivers.

Superannuation, DASP & Remittance

Superannuation while you stay
  • The Superannuation Guarantee is 11.5% of ordinary earnings from 1 July 2024
  • Concessional contributions are taxed at only 15% inside super, versus marginal rates up to 45%
  • Excellent compound-growth vehicle if you are staying permanently
DASP when you leave permanently
  • Temporary visa holders (students, 482/485 workers) can claim the Departing Australia Superannuation Payment on leaving
  • DASP withholding tax: 35% (65% for working holiday makers)
  • Compare with keeping the funds in a Probashi FDR (11-12.5% tax-free in Bangladesh)

Australia and Bangladesh have no double-taxation agreement in force, so Bangladeshi-sourced income is assessed under Australian foreign-income rules — keep clean remittance records and declare Bangladeshi assets. Remitting your post-tax salary home earns the Bangladesh Bank 2.5% cash incentive on top of the exchange rate.
