Spouse visa & financial requirement
Minimum income £29,000/year, or cash savings of £88,500 as an alternative. English requirement steps up A1 (entry) → A2 (extension) → B1 (ILR). Mandatory TB screening at the IOM Migration Health Assessment Clinic in Dhaka before applying.
ILR & 10-year long residence
5-year settlement routes: max 180 days absence per 12 months. 10-year long residence: 548 days total absence, and no single absence over 184 continuous days. Life in the UK Test plus B1 English must be in hand before you apply.
British-born child: dual status protocol
British Nationality Act 1981 s1(1): the child is automatically British if either parent holds ILR, settled status or British citizenship. Bangladesh Citizenship Act 1951 s5: automatic citizenship by descent through a Bangladeshi parent. Recommended order: UK passport → BDRIS birth registration → NVR endorsement at the High Commission.
Driving in the UK on a BD licence (DVLA 12-month rule)
You can drive non-commercial cars or motorcycles in Great Britain on a valid Bangladesh licence for up to 12 months from becoming resident. Bangladesh is a non-designated country — no direct swap. Apply for a UK provisional licence before month 12 expires, then pass the theory and practical tests. Driving past the 12 months invalidates your motor insurance.
Life in the UK prep & HMRC cross-border tax
Bilingual study companion for the official 3rd-edition chapters, plus mock papers and Sylheti audio guides for elder sponsors. On tax: the UK-Bangladesh double taxation treaty prevents dual liability — keep a clean remittance paper-trail for Bangladeshi property sale proceeds to avoid HMRC Worldwide Disclosure Facility inquiries.
Verified British-Bangladeshi Directory
A vetted registry of solicitors and OISC advisors, ACCA accountants, Islamic mortgage advisors, halal caterers and Gas Safe engineers fluent in Bengali and Sylheti is being assembled for London, Birmingham, Manchester, Oldham and Luton. Listings require proof of professional registration.
