Time Duration Calculator

Work out how long a shift, class or trip lasts between a start time and end time, including overnight shifts that pass midnight.

How it works

Enter a start and end time in 24-hour format. The result shows hours and minutes, decimal hours, and total minutes.

If the end time is earlier than or equal to the start time, the calculator assumes the period passes midnight, for example a 22:00 to 06:30 overnight shift.

Times use a 24-hour clock, so enter 5:30 PM as 17:30.

Frequently asked questions

How do I enter times in the afternoon or evening?

Use 24-hour time: 1 PM is 13:00, 5:30 PM is 17:30, and 11 PM is 23:00.

Can it handle overnight shifts?

Yes. If the end time is on or before the start time, the duration is measured across midnight and flagged as overnight.

What is decimal time useful for?

Timesheets and payroll often ask for hours as decimals: 8 hours 30 minutes becomes 8.5. The calculator shows both forms.
