Dhaka Airfare & Baggage Allowance: When to Book
Two different rules decide what travels home with you: the airline's checked allowance, and Bangladesh customs. Most people confuse the two and get caught at the counter or at the green channel. This page separates them, and covers the weeks when Dhaka fares climb.
Airline allowance, not customs limit
The airline decides how many kilos it will carry for the fare you bought. Bangladesh customs decides what you may bring in without paying duty once you land. A 40 kg airline allowance does not make 40 kg of dutiable goods free, and a nappy bag over the duty-free limit still attracts duty.
Check your duty-free limits with the customs duty calculator before you pack, not at the airport.
How allowances are actually set
| Rule | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Piece concept | You get a number of bags, each capped at 23 kg in economy and 32 kg in business. A third bag costs a flat fee, not a per-kilo rate. |
| Weight concept | You get one total weight, often 30 to 40 kg, split across as many bags as you like. Going one kilo over means paying per kilo. |
| Fare family | Light and basic fares on the same flight can include no checked bag. The cheapest ticket is often the most expensive once you add one. |
| Status and route | Elite status and some student or family fares add a bag. Gulf hub routes are often more generous than thin direct routes. |
Carriers flying the Bangladesh routes
Allowances change with fare and season, so check the carrier page for your booking rather than a remembered figure from last year.

When Dhaka fares climb
Prices on Bangladesh routes are driven by a handful of predictable surges: the two Eids, the December return rush, and the July school holidays. Fares usually peak in the three weeks before each one, then fall away sharply the week after.
- Book two to four months ahead for Eid travel. Inside three weeks you are paying the peak, not the route.
- Midweek departures are usually cheaper than Thursday to Sunday, and the gap widens near Eid.
- Compare the same ticket searched from Canada or the UK against searching from Bangladesh. Point-of-sale pricing differs for identical seats.
- A one-stop Gulf routing often undercuts a direct flight by enough to pay for the extra bag.
Excess kilos versus a second bag
Airport excess counters charge the highest rate in the system, per kilo. Buying a second bag online before departure is a flat fee and usually works out cheaper once you are moving more than about ten kilos. Beyond that, a cargo consignment through a forwarder per kilo can beat both, but it arrives separately and needs clearing.
Work out the numbers before you choose: a flat second-bag fee divided by the extra kilos is your effective per-kilo rate. If that figure is lower than the excess rate, buy the bag online.
Before you pay for the ticket
- Confirm whether the fare includes a checked bag, and how many.
- Check whether the route is piece concept or weight concept. It changes what one kilo over costs.
- Note the per-piece cap. A 30 kg suitcase cannot fly as one piece on a 23 kg allowance.
- Price the second bag online against the excess rate at the airport.
- Run gold, phones and appliances through the customs calculator, separately from the airline allowance.
- Screenshot the allowance page for your booking. Counters apply the fare rules, not what a call centre told you.
Frequently asked questions
How much baggage can I take to Bangladesh?
It depends on the airline and the fare, not on Bangladesh customs. Most full-service carriers on Dhaka routes give economy passengers two pieces of 23 kg on piece-concept routes, while weight-concept carriers give a single weight allowance, often 30 to 40 kg. Basic and light fares can include no checked bag at all, so check the fare family before you book.
Is it cheaper to pay excess baggage or ship a parcel?
For one or two extra kilos, paying at the airport is usually the cheaper route. Past roughly 10 kg, a second checked bag bought online in advance, or a cargo consignment through a freight forwarder, generally beats airport excess rates. Airport counters charge per kilo at walk-up rates, which are the most expensive way to move weight.
When are Dhaka flights most expensive?
Fares climb in the weeks before Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha, through mid-December to mid-January, and in July when families travel on school holidays. Booking two to four months ahead, and flying midweek rather than Thursday to Sunday, is the reliable way to pay less.
Does a stopover airline give me more baggage?
Sometimes. Gulf carriers often give a more generous allowance than a direct carrier on the same route, and some increase it for longer layovers or for students. The allowance is tied to the marketing carrier and the fare, so compare the total including bags rather than the ticket price alone.
Can I carry gold and electronics in my luggage?
You can carry them, but Bangladesh customs limits what enters duty-free. Gold, phones, laptops and appliances each fall under separate allowances and duty bands, and the customs declaration is what matters, not the airline allowance. Run your items through the customs duty calculator before you pack.
