Dhaka Recommendations: Food & Shopping

কী খাবেন, কী কিনবেন — প্রবাসীর চোখে ঢাকা

Every visit home has two lists: the food you have not tasted since you left, and the shopping worth carrying back. Here is the probashi shortlist for both.

The food probashi miss first

Start with old Dhaka: a plate of kacchi biryani or tehari around Nazira Bazar still beats anything the probashi restaurants abroad attempt. Street food comes next — fuchka, chotpoti, jhalmuri and chaat from a busy stall (busy means fresh, and freshly fried means safer). Add a glass of borhani with biryani, and finish with mishti from a household-name sweet shop.

Seasons decide the rest: summer means mango (the Rajshahi and Fazli season runs May to July), lychee in June and jackfruit at its peak; monsoon brings ilish. Winter visitors get the best of all — date-palm gur, winter pithas and nolen gurer mishti that simply do not survive export.

Shopping worth buying in Dhaka

Buy what Bangladesh makes best: jamdani and muslin from the weavers around Narayanganj, nakshi kantha, and leather — bags, shoes and jackets — from a country that exports leather worldwide. Fabrics and panjabis from Islampuri wholesale, Sylhet garden tea in sealed packs, and handicraft-shop pieces that pack flat.

Skip electronics and gold — both usually cost more in Dhaka than in Dubai, North America or Europe, and warranty support abroad is nil. Before you go overboard, remember the baggage quota: new purchases beyond personal-use limits can attract duty on your way back — check the customs calculator first.

Practical shopping tips for probashi

Bargain calmly at New Market and the wholesale lanes — opening prices are never final prices. Carry small notes; bKash and Nagad work almost everywhere but stalls prefer cash. Keep every receipt for new goods, pack fragile buys in the middle of your suitcase, and remember the send-money rule in reverse: nothing beats hand-carried, well-chosen gifts for the family.

Frequently asked questions

Can I carry Dhaka food back abroad?

Sealed, dry and shelf-stable items — tea, gur, spices, packaged mishti — usually fly fine. Fresh fruit, meat and dried fish are restricted by most destination customs. Check both your airline and the destination country before packing.

Is electronics cheaper in Dhaka?

Almost never. Laptops and phones usually cost more than in North America, Europe or the Gulf, and the warranty is Bangladesh-only. Buy electronics where you live.

Which months are best for fruit shopping?

Mango runs May to July, lychee peaks in June, and jackfruit fills the summer. If you visit in winter, trade fruit for gur, pithas and nolen gur mishti instead.

Where can I buy jamdani without overpaying?

Buy from established showrooms or weaver cooperatives around Narayanganj and ask for the handloom certification. Prices scale with the fineness of the work, so compare two or three shops before deciding.
