Passport Renewal for Probashi
ছয় মাসের নিয়ম, দূতাবাস থেকে নবায়ন আর দেশে গিয়ে করলে যা বদলায়
Your Bangladesh passport expires abroad, or too soon before your next trip? Here is when to renew, where to renew, and what changes if you do it during a visit home.
The six-month rule
Airlines and immigration counters routinely refuse travel when a passport has less than six months of validity left — even for a direct trip to Dhaka. Mark that line in your calendar: when your passport crosses it, book the renewal before you book anything else.
The Canada hub has a date-driven planner that works for any consulate: enter your expiry date and it shows how many safe travel days remain and when to start. Use it even if you live elsewhere.
Renewing from abroad
Every Bangladesh mission abroad runs passport renewal through its consular desk — application form, your current passport, photos and the fee for your chosen service tier. Each Probashi Hub country page links to its own desk with the current fee tables and step-by-step workflows.
The e-passport needs biometric enrolment at the mission or an approved enrolment centre, so factor in an in-person visit and allow several weeks of processing. Your old passport comes back cancelled — keep it, because valid visas inside it still matter.
Renewing during a visit home
Regional passport offices in Dhaka and the divisional cities renew or reissue passports while you are in Bangladesh, with one-day and urgent tiers for a higher fee. You must be present for biometrics, so plan the office visit early in your trip rather than the last week.
If your passport has already expired while you are abroad, you cannot fly on it — renew before your next trip. If you are genuinely stranded, the mission can issue an emergency travel document to get you home.
Foreign passport with an NVR seal
If you travel on a foreign passport carrying the NVR (No Visa Required) seal, Bangladesh entry is covered for life — you can renew your Bangladeshi passport whenever it suits you, or keep it only for identity purposes. Children born abroad qualify for Bangladeshi passports by descent through the mission.
Frequently asked questions
How much does renewal cost?
Fees differ between ordinary MRP reissue, e-passport enrolment and urgent tiers, and missions update them periodically — check your hub's consular desk for the current table rather than relying on old numbers.
Can I travel while my renewal is in process?
Yes, while your old passport is still with you and valid for six months or more. The safest pattern is to renew in the quiet months between trips so you are never grounded mid-process.
What if my passport is lost abroad?
File a police report first, then contact the nearest Bangladesh mission with the report, your NID or a copy of the passport and photos. They can issue an emergency travel document for immediate travel or process a full reissue.
Do NVR holders need a Bangladeshi passport at all?
Not for entry — the NVR seal in your foreign passport covers Bangladesh for life. Many keep a valid Bangladeshi passport anyway for property, banking and identity paperwork at home.
