Permesso di Soggiorno Renewal Planner

Enter your permit expiry and see exactly when to file the Poste kit, when the legal window opens and closes, and what to do at each step.

About this tool

Italian rules require renewals to be filed at least 60 days before the permit expires, and the Poste counters usually accept the kit from 90 days out. File in the 90-to-60-day window and you keep a safety margin for Questura appointment delays. A late renewal is accepted only within 60 days after expiry — beyond that the permit lapses and the process restarts as a new issue.

The kit, step by step

Get the yellow kit free from a Poste Sportello Amico counter, fill the application form for your permit type, and attach photocopies of your passport, existing permit and — for work permits — your contract or pay slips. Budget for the postal fees, the €16 revenue stamp and the €30.46 contribution for permits longer than three months. The counter clerk hands back a receipt with your tracking number.

You then wait for the Questura fingerprint appointment shown on the receipt — most provinces run months behind, and the ricevuta (receipt) plus your expired permit keeps you legal and working while the renewal is pending. Watch for the SMS or poste-assicurate notice telling you to collect the new card.

Tracking and travel while pending

Track the application on the Portale Immigrazione website with the receipt number from your kit — it shows the Questura appointment and processing status, so you do not queue at the counter for news.

Travel is the trap: the receipt plus the expired permit lets you re-enter Italy directly, but it does not open other Schengen countries, and long stays abroad can complicate the pending file. If the permit lapses fully while you are in Bangladesh, returning needs a re-entry visa from the Italian Embassy in Dhaka.

Frequently asked questions

Can I file the kit more than 90 days early?

Most Poste counters refuse kits before the 90-day mark, because the law anchors renewals to the 60-day window. Set the planner's reminder for 90 days out and use the waiting time to collect documents.

What if I missed the expiry date entirely?

Within 60 days after expiry, renewals are still accepted with a fine risk attached. Past that grace window the permit has lapsed: working becomes illegal immediately, and re-entering Italy requires a new visa application at the Embassy in Dhaka.

Can I keep working with just the receipt?

Yes — the kit receipt presented together with the expired permit preserves your right to live and work in Italy while the renewal is being processed. Employers may ask for both documents together, so carry them as a pair.

How long does a renewal take once fingerprints are done?

It varies sharply by Questura — a few months in fast provinces, a year or more in the slowest ones. The receipt keeps you covered the entire time, which is exactly why filing early matters.

Do all post offices accept the kit?

No — only branches with a Sportello Amico immigration desk handle permesso kits, and queues form early. The planner's 90-day reminder gives you room to find a branch and book the morning slot.
